Charles Henry Lay was born on 11 April 1885 in Singleton, New South Wales, Australia. He married Lilian Maude Fowler on 19 April 1911 in Sydney, New South Wales. They had four children during their marriage. He died on 5 April 1957 at the age of 71, and was buried in Sydney, New South Wales.
